Consensus on competence and learning path for Maintenance Manager.

Where does maintenance management stand as a profession?

What makes a skilled maintenance manager and how can you learn this expertise?

Consensus was in the research project 'EuroMaint - Skills for Maintenance Managers in Europe "was archieved on a competency profile and learning path for obtaining the academic title "Master of Maintenance”.

Representatives of industrial associations and universities from fifteen European countries provide a sound basis for a structural cooperation on Maintenance. Regarding the European integration and international cooperation and operation it is desirable and necessary to establish uniform requirements for the position and competencies of maintenance management.

Van der Meer & van Tilburg ensured the development and support of this project. Van der Meer & Van Tilburg has worked closely with the European Federation of National Maintenance Societies (EFNMS) and some other European universities and companies of industry.

To ensure the technical safety and reliability of production and transportation many quality standards and regulations exist. But although the competencelevel of the responsible personnel in design and maintenance is essential to ensure safety and reliability, international standards lack.

The Leonardo da Vinci project EuroMaint provides methods for developing knowledge of

the maintenance process. Primary goal is to embed in the qualification system the European certification system in the different countries. This results in the first place in comparable

training methods. The final result will be a European certification system of the various training programs in the field of technology maintenance and maintenance management.

The target group is formed by stakeholders in the maintenance process (engineers and managers) of technical installations in the industry. A transparent qualification is essential for both the Maintenance Engineers, Maintenance Contractors and maintenance managers.

Meanwhile, the next steps are taken by the Euromaint partners:

  • Identifying and analyzing the required professional and general skills of engineers and managers in the maintenance process
  • Achieving international agreement on the competencies.
  • Formulate a procedure for a personal development plan (PDP) to develop the required skills.
  • Developing educational materials for developing the required skills.
  • Developing a European certification system.
  • Providing modern teaching resources that can be used for example in classroom training, distance learning and training in the workplace. The content and quality of these learning resources is the responsibility of the European partners.
Currently the project is differentiated into the food, automotive, wind, corrosion control, water distribution.
